It's 2008. Don't tell me you're surprised that you can buy a margarita in a can. And if you tell us you are surprised at how good it tastes, that's probably because you don't know about El Tequileno.
For 50 years the company has been tending its agave fields in Jalisco, distilling award-winning tequilas in (where else) Tequila and aging them in Guadalajara.
The company wanted to reach out to the younger generations of Mexican consumers with a beverage that reflected the way they consumed tequila: with soda and citrus.
And so Tequileno Ice was born, an 8-ounce can of tequila and citrus-flavored soda ready to drink, easy to chill, store and transport, and soon to be making appearances in barbecue coolers, at days at the beach, on the golf course, and wherever else thirsty people are relaxing.
They call it margarita in a can, but the combination of tequila and citrus soda is much more like the alcohol/Squirt cocktails we've seen in Mexico. Not that we are complaining.
While already lined up for distribution in California, Jorge Antonio Herrera, El Tequileno's international business manager, says the product's official debut at the NRA show has put the company in contact with restaurant owners and distributors who will help bring out the product out elsewhere.
The demand is exceeding expectations. "We expected 150,000 cans per year, but it's turning out to be 450,000," Herrera said.
Hey, America: 10 of those are for us at Blog Central, OK?
