Presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) spoke to more than 2,000 restaurant professionals at the NRA Show in Chicago today, touching on everything from taxes and health care and to U.S. foreign policy. Saying Americans want to see their leaders working together, he brought a surprise visitor with him — Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.).
The National Restaurant Association also invited Sens. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Barack Obama (D-Ill.) to address the NRA Show, but the hard-at-work presidential contenders weren’t able to attend.
McCain gave a strong shout-out to his restaurant audience, praising what restaurants do for the economy. "Restaurateurs know about competition and job creation," McCain said. He said Congress’s choices affect restaurant industry health. "A plan for growth and a plan for higher taxes are hard to square."
He favors a phaseout of the Alternative Minimum Tax, keeping the federal capital gains tax intact, and extending the Bush Administration’s tax cuts, which are set to expire in 2010. He also favors giving employees a large tax credit to help them buy health care.
